THE LOWDOWN

World number one Iga Swiatek is yet to drop a set as the defending champion here in Paris but she weathered her biggest test yet against an initially impressive Coco Gauff on Wednesday, a repeat of last summer’s final, before coming through the second set more comfortably. The 22-year-old also won her first Grand Slam here on 2020 and only Maria Sakkari has beaten her here since then, although she was admittedly injured in their quarter-final clash in 2021. Swiatek is in an all-out race with world number two Aryna Sabalenka for the top spot on the WTA tour here in Paris after the Belarussian recently beat her in three sets to claim the Madrid Open title.

27-year-old Beatriz Haddad-Maia will break the top 10 on tour for the first time no matter the outcome of this match – unless fellow semi-finalist goes on to win a maiden Grand Slam title against the odds this weekend. The Brazilian came back from a set down to Ons Jabeur via a remarkable second-set tiebreak that totally changed the momentum of the match, claiming her third comeback in a row at Roland-Garros. Haddad-Maia has featured in the top three longest matches on the WTA tour, including the top one of just under four hours against Sara Sorribes Tormo on Monday.

THE PREDICTION

Beatriz Haddad-Maia is making a vastly impressive habit of coming back from a set down to win at Roland-Garros and she can take some confidence into this toughest draw of the lot. The Brazilian beat Swiatek in three sets at the Canada Masters last summer to hold one of very few positive records over the Pole and it will be fascinating to see how Swiatek reacts to the Paris crowd encouraging her opponent to make a match of this after her blistering run to the semi-finals. Swiatek’s dominance at Roland-Garros is a force of its own to have to combat but Haddad-Maia clearly has the grit to tackle it, at least for a while. The suitably cautious move is backing Swiatek to win outright but realistically the Pole is at the peak of her powers in conditions that complement her game perfectly and she should be able to make the final without dropping a set.
