THE PREDICTION
World number 106 Hugo Gaston did well to beat fellow Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in straight sets on Wednesday and the 22-year-old should be much better for it after enduring a poor start to 2023. Gaston is certainly one of the more ‘specialist’ clay-courters out there but so far his best runs have been limited to Paris at both Roland-Garros and the Paris Masters as a player who seemingly needs the confidence of a partisan atmosphere to find his best level. World number 20 Borna Coric is an excellent all-courter who should be winning this first encounter with Gaston in straight sets but the Croat has struggled with both form and fitness in recent months. A five-match losing streak coming into Madrid’s unusual conditions suggests that Gaston has a chance at an upset here but it is hard to back the Frenchman confidently. The suitably cautious move is probably taking Coric to earn at least a set but consider either a one-off on Gaston to snatch an upset here or leaving the match alone altogether.
