THE PREDICTION

This could be a proper thriller on Wednesday between two players who excel on grass. World number 12 Hubert Hurkacz reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last season with vastly impressive performances over Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev on the back of a world-class net game that makes him a future contender at SW19. The Pole overcame serve-and-volley throwback Maxime Cressy on Tuesday for a first win on grass this season but he will have to up that level against the defending Halle champion Ugo Humbert. 23-year-old Humbert has struggled with his form all season long after contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open but he came back from a set down to beat Radu Albot on Monday in a match that could save his season. Humbert set a career-high ATP world ranking of 25th this time last season after winning his third ATP title and he too has all the tools to be a world-beater on this surface.

At this moment in time both players are a little suspect form-wise but with Hurkacz less-so backing the Pole to edge this outright seems a reasonable risk. Perhaps picking three sets to leave the winner up to chance would be a safer alternative.
