THE PREDICTION

10th seed Hubert Hurkacz beat Pedro Martinez in straight sets on Monday for a solid opener at the Australian Open and the Pole is a creditable threat to the latter stages of this tournament despite recent average form. The 25-year-old won the Halle Open last summer in a masterclass on grass to beat Daniil Medvedev and he is well capable of challenging the very best on tour, notably becoming the last player to beat Roger Federer in singles at Wimbledon in 2021 on his way to a semi-final exit. By an odd trick of fate, world number 47 Lorenzo Sonego is the last player to have lost to Federer in a round of 16 exit at SW19 before Hurkacz’ victory but the Italian leads this head-to-head record 3-1 after upsetting the Pole in the semi-finals of the Metz Open late last season - later winning his third ATP title there.

The 27-year-old is better than his current ranking suggests but he is one of the streakier players on tour. A four-set win over Nuno Borges does not exactly scream confidence in this fifth meeting with Hurkacz and the outdoor conditions should suit the Pole’s game more than their previous indoor encounters. Four or even five sets seem likelier than three but Hurkacz can be backed to see the third round here.
