THE LOWDOWN

HUBERT HURKACZ

World number 14 Hubert Hurkacz put in a very impressive display to beat in-form clay specialist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Wednesday via a third set tiebreak. The 25-year-old won his first Masters title last season at the Miami Open and defended it valiantly last month before eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz beat him in the semi-finals. Hurkacz won the Miami Open Men’s Doubles alongside John Isner and the pair are through to the quarter-finals here in Madrid.

DUSAN LAJOVIC

World number 77 Dusan Lajovic claimed one of the best results of his recent years on tour with a three-set victory over the fifth seed Casper Ruud on Wednesday. The 31-year-old still has the potential to be one of the toughest players to beat on clay on tour but confidence has hampered him for at least the last year or so and it could be that coming through the qualifiers this week has bolstered his resolve. Lajovic finished runner-up to Fabio Fognini at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2019.

THE PREDICTION

Dusan Lajovic has managed to string a run of good performances together this week for the first time in what feels like ages and the Serb should be buzzing from that momentum in this second ever meeting with Hubert Hurkacz. The Pole won their first encounter in four sets at Wimbledon in 2019 but on his least effective surface here this could come even closer if Lajovic manages to replicate the level that bested Casper Ruud on Wednesday. This has some upset potential, so with both players’ matches so far seeing three sets each take Hurkacz to win at least one as the likelier of two capable winners.
