HOLGER RUNE VS PABLO CARRENO BUSTA PREDICTION
Holger Rune has had a mixed season so far which has not been helped by a wrist injury which forced him out of the Olympics but he will be hoping his injury troubles are behind him. Rune had the perfect preparation for this clash with Pablo Carreno Busta as he had to overcome fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round. He won that match in three sets despite looked pretty rusty at times and serving seven double faults. He will have to sharpen up in this match and upcoming matches if he is to progress deep into the tournament in Montreal but he will be confident of doing so.
Pablo Carreno Busta has plenty of pedigree in Montreal having won this tournament back in 2022 but this is his first ATP 1000 event since Paris in 2022. Tendonitis has plagued him in the last 18 months but his win over Fabian Maroszan will give hi m huge confidence. Additionally, he can face Rune with the knowledge that he has beaten him in their three previous meetings including back in that triumphant 2022 campaign here in Montreal.
Despite those factors clearly in Carreno Busta’s favour, the lack of game time and sharpness will catch up with him this week and it is hard to see him going too far. He did well to beat Maroszan but Rune should have the quality to push him harder and expose his lack of match practise. We favour Rune but do not be surprised if this too goes three sets.
