THE PREDICTION

This is a hugely surprising Sofia Open final line-up with Jannik Sinner missing for the first time in three years but fifth-seed Holger Rune produced a stunning level of tennis on Saturday, eventually overcoming the Italian in three sets when Sinner was forced to retire from the third. Rune reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros this summer as a clear future star on clay but his hardcourt form this week has been something of a surprise with victories over in-form Lorenzo Sonego and Ilya Ivashka coming against the run of play. 26-year-old Marc-Andrea Huesler will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 74th after reaching the first tour final of his career and he could break the top 70 by winning the Sofia Open. The Swiss stunned second-seed Pablo Carreno Busta in the round of 16 and took out fourth-seed Lorenzo Musetti on Saturday in impressive fashion but he remains the underdog in this final despite beating Rune in their only previous encounter.

Huesler met Rune in a particularly low ebb at the Bastad Open back in July, with the Dane still recoiling from his quarter-final exit at Roland-Garros. Beating Sinner on Saturday and having won his maiden ATP title back in April are two reasons to side with the 19-year-old in this final, although you could be forgiven for taking at least a set and leaving the victor up to chance.
