THE PREDICTION

World number three Daniil Medvedev and number seven Holger Rune will meet for the second time this season after Rune beat the Russian in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters last month. 20-year-old Rune went on to finish runner-up to Andrey Rublev in Monte-Carlo in his second of now three Masters finals but he already has excellent pedigree at this level after claiming his first at Novak Djokovic’s expense at the Paris Masters last November. The Dane also beat Djokovic here in Rome in a deeply impressive quarter-final and he came back well to beat Casper Ruud to back that up strongly on Saturday. However, there have been occasions where the youngster has experience serious cramping deep in tournaments, particularly after hefty battles, and three three-set matches in a row certainly leaves some cause for concern here.

27-year-old Medvedev has won more matches than anyone on tour this season but he will come into this final as the underdog on his least favourite surface. A straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas on Saturday was hugely impressive in these conditions and after three straight-set matches on the spin he will know his best chance at beating one of the very best on clay here is tiring his opponent out. Expect Rune to try and close points early and Medvedev to rally side-to-side wherever he can, with a high chance of aggro between two players who are not afraid to vent their frustrations. This should be a thrilling Italian Open final and with three sets likely the sensible option is backing Rune to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable champions. Otherwise, consider the three-set option to leave the victor up to chance.
