HOLGER RUNE VS CARLOS ALCARAZ PREDICTION
Holger Rune’s performance at the Shanghai Masters pretty much sums up the 21-year-old’s year so far. He looked in fine form in beating the dangerous Matteo Berrettini and then Jiri Lehecka but was then well and truly hammered by Taylor Fritz 6-1 6-2 in the round of 16.
It is consistency that is holding back the talented Dane from really pushing on to elite levels but he has an opportunity in this tournament against the best in the world.
He faces Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals and he can take some solace from having beaten him before. That came in Paris when Alcaraz was forced to retire but Rune was one set up going into a second-set tiebreak.
Alcaraz has won the other two meetings however and he certainly comes into this tournament in better form than Rune. He won the China Open in Beijing winning a thriller against Jannik Sinner but was then stunned by Tomas Machac in the quarters in Shanghai last week. He will be rested coming into this one and will be primed to do well in the tournament.
There is very little reason to go against Alcaraz here despite the value on Rune looking tempting. He is playing better than his opponent right now, will be fired up to do well in Riyadh and has edged the head-to-head. We like Alcaraz’s chances this week and he should get the win.
