World number nine Andrey Rublev beat John Isner for the first time on Tuesday to boost his hopes of making the ATP Finals and he achieved that goal when Taylor Fritz was knocked out of the Paris Masters on Wednesday. 25-year-old Rublev has added another four ATP titles to his career total of now 12 after recently claiming the Gijon Open but his record at Masters level still leaves much to be desired by his high standards. Qualifying for the ATP Finals should see some of the pressure off the Russian’s shoulders and that could be a good thing, unlike for so many players in his situation, as Rublev’s self-admonishing has been hard to watch at times this season. Red-hot Holger Rune has beaten Stan Wawrinka and Hubert Hurkacz so far in Paris as he maintains the form that has seen him reach back-to-back tour finals in Stockholm and Basel. The 19-year-old beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to claim the second ATP title of his career in Stockholm and he looks the favourite on current form to edge this first encounter with Rublev. However, the Russian should be better for being looser now and backing Rune to earn at least a set looks the sensible way to avoid picking a winner here.
