THE PREDICTION

This looks set to be a thrilling end to what has been a Monte-Carlo Open full of shocks this week. World number six Andrey Rublev came back from a set down to oust in-form Taylor Fritz, who himself put out the two-time defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, whilst world number nine Holger Rune produced a similar fightback to stun tournament favourite Jannik Sinner. 19-year-old Rune also put out red-hot Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals in a campaign that has seen the Dane rediscover his best form from late last season, where he stunned Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final to earn his first Masters title. Rune beat Rublev in straight sets en-route to that ATP 1000 title in November but the Russian returned the favour in a five-set epic at the Australian Open in January to level their head-to-head at 1-1.

25-year-old Rublev has been here before after losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas in his first Masters final and he lost his second later in 2021 to Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open. The Russian will be desperate to make it third time lucky at this level but that desperation often costs him in the key moments and Rune is certainly the more comfortable player in these conditions despite Rublev’s prowess on clay. Having beaten two of most in-form players on tour right now in Medvedev and Sinner, back Rune to win this outright.
