THE LOWDOWN

Former world number four Bianca Andreescu capped-off her remarkable breakthrough season in 2019 with a first Grand Slam title here at the US Open on her debut, beating Serena Williams in the final. The Canadian also won two Masters events from Indian Wells and the Rogers Cup on home soil that season but she has since struggled with an inordinate amount of injuries to fall back to a current world ranking of 50th. Andreescu reached the round of 16 in her second US Open campaign last season and she should be considered a very dark horse here. World number 111 Harmony Tan received a wildcard to the main draw at the US Open as rewards for her excellent run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month, where she stunned Serena Williams in a first round epic. The 24-year-old should be ranked well inside the catchment zone for automatic qualification but for lack of ranking points at SW19 and it will be interesting to see how she fares in another tough opener.

THE PREDICTION

Harmony Tan will face a former champion in the first round of a Grand Slam for the second time in a row after her exploits at Wimbledon last month shocked the tennis world but she has since failed to win a tour-level match. The Frenchwoman will also lack the element of surprise this time around against a powerful ball-striker in Andreescu who should be way more mobile than Serena Williams was able to be on grass. Back the Canadian to win in straight sets.
