HAILEY BAPTISTE VS JASMINE PAOLINI PREDICTION
22-year-old Hailey Baptiste was edged out of qualifying by 2021 semi-finalist Tamara Zidansek last week but she made full use of her second wind as a lucky loser, coming back from a set down to beat Kayla Day. The American can break her career-high WTA world ranking of 96th if she can reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time but she has been unfortunate to draw one of 2024’s form players in Jasmine Paolini, who is rarely beaten for grit on court.
The world number 15 beat Daria Saville in straight sets on Monday to bounce back from a surprising exit to in-form Mayar Sherif at the Italian Open earlier this month but she reached the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time in Melbourne back in January before a remarkable run to the Dubai Masters title.
Three sets feel distinctly possible here, particularly as Baptiste won their only previous encounter back in 2021, so taking Paolini to win outright is the sensible concession and Baptiste to earn at least a set the reasonable risk.
