THE LOWDOWN

Nine-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic overcame qualifier Enzo Couacaud in four sets on Thursday to win his 36th-straight match in Australia and his 23rd in a row at the Australian Open itself after claiming the title in his last three appearances here. However, Djokovic’s biggest opponent this time around is an apparently worsening hamstring injury that saw him hampered for much of his second round match with Couacaud. Djokovic won his 21st Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last summer and he can level Rafael Nadal’s Men’s record of 22 this fortnight.

THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov trails Novak Djokovic 9-1 in a pretty comprehensive head-to-head record but he may never have a better opportunity to beat the Serb than right here. The Bulgarian is yet to drop a set in Melbourne after two solid wins over Aslan Karatsev and Laslo Djere but a defeat in three sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the United Cup at the start of the season suggests he is still the underdog. A lot of this match relies on Djokovic’s recovery team working wonders but the Serb will have to try his best to win this in three, with Dimitrov’s chances at winning increasing with each passing hour. Dimitrov will know to target Djokovic’s corners, with moving side to side looking to trouble the Serb the most against Couacaud, and backing the Bulgarian to win at least a set looks a reasonable way to stay largely impartial in this potential thriller.
