World number 37 Gael Monfils reached the semi-finals here back in 2008 but clay has never been his forte, making his four-set victory over clay specialist Thiago Seyboth Wild on Monday all the more impressive. 22-year-old Musetti has endured a truly woeful past 10 or so months on tour but he looked assured in a straight sets win over Daniel Elahi Galan on Monday and at his best he remains one of the most natural clay-courters around.
Cold conditions in the night session probably level the playing field a little, in as much as they suit neither player, but home advantage should count for something in what could be Monfils’ last campaign at his home major. Back Monfils to earn at least two sets as the likelier of the two to edge through this particular occasion.
