THE LOWDOWN

GAEL MONFILS

35-year-old Gael Monfils weathered an early storm against world number one Daniil Medvedev to come back from a set down and beat the Russian in vastly impressive fashion. The victory is Monfils’ first over a world number one player since beating Rafael Nadal at the Qatar Open in 2009 as the Frenchman continues the insatiable form that took him to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January. Former world number six Monfils won the 11th ATP title of his career at Adelaide 1 at the start of this season.

CARLOS ALCARAZ

18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz dismissed fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut for just two conceded games on Monday as he continues his assault towards breaking the top 10. Alcaraz will set a new career-high of at least 18th no matter the outcome here as he takes a seven-match winning streak into the round if 16 at Indian Wells off the back of a first ATP 500 title at the Rio Open last month.

THE PREDICTION

It is astonishing to suggest that the player who just beat Daniil Medvedev, Gael Monfils, is the underdog in this first meeting with Spanish prodigy Carlos Alcaraz but, alas, here we are. The 18-year-old has lost just one match this season to Matteo Berrettini at the Australian Open and even that came as close as they come over five sets. He avenged that defeat by beating the world number six on his way to the Rio Open title and conceding just two games to Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round here is scary form. Monfils has every chance after his heroics this season but the teenager’s trajectory is such that it may take his idol Rafael Nadal to halt him at Indian Wells. Take Alcaraz to win at least a set as the likelier winner here or take the risk with an outright pick for the future world number one.
