THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Karen Khachanov will be confident of reaching the round of 16 at the Italian Open as he takes on Francisco Cerundolo for the second time on clay this swing, with a three-set victory over the Argentine at this stage of the Monte-Carlo Masters last month his fourth on the spin in their surprisingly one-sided 4-0 head-to-head. The 27-year-old reached the round of 16 at the Madrid Open last week before a tight three-set exit to top seed Jannik Sinner and he beat Alexander Shevchenko in two on Friday to look solid in conditions that suit his tireless engine.

World number 22 Cerundolo went one better in Madrid, throwing aside some poor form this year to stun fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the last 16. The 25-year-old struggled against a similarly robust player in Taylor Fritz, though, to suggest Khachanov’s relentless pressure is just that bit more effective in this match-up. Three of their four previous meetings have seen sets go both ways so back Khachanov to win outright.

TIP: KAREN KHACHANOV TO WIN
