THE PREDICTION

The draw has opened up massively in Frances Tiafoe and Alexander Bublik’s quarter and with it a huge opportunity. Both players are yet to drop sets after two rounds, with world number 28 Tiafoe taking out Andrea Vavassori and Maximilian Marterer whilst Bublik has ousted tougher foes in Marton Fucsovics and Dusan Lajovic. The pair met only last week at the Eastbourne International, where Tiafoe took the first set before seeming to run out of steam in a three-set defeat but their head-to-head record is finely poised at 1-1 after the American won their first meeting in Washington back in 2019. That season Tiafoe reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for a first time at the Australian Open and he has the potential to emulate that on grass, a surface he professes to love, this week. Bublik, however, is the epitome of a loose cannon and well capable of a serious deep run of his own.

Taking both players to win a set here looks a suitable way to avoid picking a winner but last week’s result suggests taking Bublik to win at least two could be the slightly more valuable option.
