THE PREDICTION
This could be a fascinating fourth encounter between world number two Carlos Alcaraz, defending champion here at Indian Wells, and former number six Felix Auger-Aliassime. Current number 31 Auger-Aliassime leads their head-to-head 3-1 as things stand but Alcaraz won their most recent encounter in straight sets in the quarter-finals here a year ago, with the Canadian’s season completely unravelling afterwards. 23-year-old Auger-Aliassime did manage to defend his Swiss indoors title in October to avoid a total washout in 2023 but he is eons away from the player who beat Alcaraz to the semi-finals of the US Open in 2021, with the Spaniard going on to win his maiden Grand Slam title in New York a year later and a second major at Wimbledon last summer.
Alcaraz, however, has failed to win a tournament since that fateful day at SW19 and recent injuries have certainly hampered his return to form in 2024. The second seed came back from a set down to beat up-and-coming Matteo Arnaldi, conceding just one game after losing the first set to suggest some resolute tennis is about to burst forth, but Auger-Aliassime coasted through his opener to make this a mouth-watering fixture. Back Alcaraz to come through outright but it would probably be wise to leave this match out of any promising accumulators.
TIP: CARLOS ALCARAZ TO WIN
