World number 36 Fabio Fognini set a new Italian Men’s record after winning his 392nd match on tour in a three-set comeback victory over Pablo Andujar. The 34-year-old’s most recent of nine career ATP titles came at the Monte-Carlo Masters back in 2019, the same year he set a career-high world ranking of ninth.
NIKOLOZ BASILASHVILI
World number 18 Nikoloz Basilashvili recently reached the Qatar Open final, of which he was defending champion, before losing a rematch of the 2021 final to Roberto Bautista Agut. The 30-year-old has five ATP titles in total, with two won last year in Qatar and on his favoured clay at the Munich Open. Basilashvili stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells last October before losing the final from a set up to Cam Norrie.
THE PREDICTION
This should be an entertaining, madcap and possibly fiery second meeting between two of the ATP tour’s hotter heads. Both Fabio Fognini and Nikoloz Basilashvili have seen their form fluctuate over the last few seasons and it is hard to pick the favourite in this match-up with both gathering some decent results of late. Fognini was the winner of their previous encounter on an American hardcourt at the Cincinnati Masters last season and the slower conditions in the desert should actually end up favouring both here. Taking Fognini to win at least a set looks the sensible compromise here.
