Former world number nine Fabio Fognini rolled back the years with a hugely surprising comeback over in-form but always erratic Alexander Bublik on Wednesday, edging two tight tiebreaks and saving two match points. The 36-year-old also beat Thiago Seyboth Wild via two tiebreaks on Tuesday to suggest he has found some serious motivation this week in Metz and that makes him dangerous in this, remarkably, first ever clash with compatriot Lorenzo Sonego. World number 49 Sonego is the defending champion here after beating Bublik in the final last season and he has impressed this week, coming back from a set down against in-form Marcos Giron before a more comfortable win over Abedallah Shelbayh. The 28-year-old is a force indoors whilst Fognini’s efforts in these conditions have come as more of a shock but both players have high ceilings and low floors to make this a very tough call. Consider taking at least a tiebreak in the match, given that there have been four in Fognini’s five sets played so far, to leave the result totally up to chance.
