THE PREDICTION

World number 61 Fabio Fognini overcame Aljaz Bedene in three sets on Tuesday with a tetchy conclusion needing the umpire’s intervention before tempers got out of hand. The 35-year-old could well require that kind of mood to reinvigorate his tennis after what has been a largely disappointing season, perhaps two seasons, by his standards – although a run to the semi-finals of the Rio Open is proof of what he is still capable of. World number 26 Karen Khachanov played his first match in a month on Monday, after the Russian/Belarussian ban at Wimbledon saw his grass swing curtailed, and he too needed three sets to oust Jan-Lennard Struff. The 26-year-old leads Fognini 2-1 in their head-to-head record but the pair have yet to face each other on clay, which should level the playing field somewhat despite Khachanov’s excellent ability on the surface. Three sets seem likelier than two, so backing Khachanov to win at least one of them looks the suitably cautious pick here.
