THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Jannik Sinner beat in-form clay-courter Pedro Martinez in straight sets on Tuesday to get his Italian Open campaign underway but the 20-year-old needs to up his intensity on this surface after some conflicting results in Madrid. Sinner was almost shocked by Tommy Paul after a loose start in Madrid but he rallied well and then beat Alex de Minaur comfortably in the second round. However, a hammering by Felix Auger-Aliassime in the round of 16 was too easy and he could fall foul of former world number nine Fabio Fognini here if the Italian veteran has a good day. It is shame for two Italians to meet so soon in Rome but Fognini will be well-backed by his dedicated following as much as Sinner will be cheered on as a future star. This first meeting is set in conditions that favour Fognini but Sinner should be able to find a way through at his level. Backing Sinner outright seems the reasonable call but taking Fognini to win at least a set could be the shrewd one.
