THE PREDICTION

World number 38 Fabio Fognini put in one of his better performances in recent months to come back from a set down and beat the fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta at the Rio Open. The Italian has won eight of his total nine ATP titles on clay, including two on the South American swing in Chile back in 2014 and Brazil four years later. World number 63 Federico Coria provided a shock of his own this week with a straight-sets victory over an out of sorts Cristian Garin on Tuesday and he played well to back that up with a three-set victory over Fernando Verdasco on Wednesday. The pair have not faced each other before but an inspired Coria could well cause another upset here as the kind of industrious player that can often frustrate the flagrant Fognini. However, the Italian is much the better player overall and realistically he should be backed to come through outright. Fognini to win at least a set is the sensible move, though.
