THE PREDICTION
Former world number 10 Emma Raducanu looked composed and confident in a straight-sets victory over Shelby Rogers on Tuesday but expectations must be measured in the Brit’s second tournament back on tour from three surgeries. It should also be noted that Rogers, whom Raducanu beat en-route to her famous US Open win in 2021, was also returning from a lengthy injury lay-off to play her first match since last summer and she started poorly before improving late on in the second. World number 94 Yafan Wang came back from 6-0 4-0 down to stun 22nd seed Sorana Cirstea, who is admittedly out of form right now, to prove herself a much more dangerous draw than Rogers. The 25-year-old tore up the ITF circuit last summer to bring her ranking up to speed and she stunned Caroline Garcia in the first round of the US Open in August to show a habit for ousting top players at major tournaments.
Raducanu’s fitness will be in question for the foreseeable but she gave no reason to doubt her ability on Tuesday. Back the Brit to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors to leave the result up to chance.
