THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Katie Boulter will break inside the top 40 for the first time after an excellent straight-sets victory over Donna Vekic in challenging windy conditions on Friday. The Brit won her maiden WTA title at the Nottingham Open on grass last summer but this is already shaping up to be her bets season on tour with victories this week over former number 19 Vekic and current number 13 Beatriz Haddad-Maia backing-up her shock result over then number three Jessica Pegula at the United Cup in January.
22-year-old Emma Navarro brought a career-high WTA world ranking of 22nd into the San Diego Open and she has emulated her run here last September by reaching the last four, beating Daria Saville in straight sets after a three-set opener over Katerina Siniakova. The American is the relatively solid favourite to find a way through to the final here on home soil, particularly as her rapid rise up the rankings began here last summer, but Boulter is improving round-on-round to make this a tough call on momentum. The suitably cautious pick is taking Navarro to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable finalists.
