THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Bianca Andreescu reached a first final on grass this week and went a set up before losing out to Caroline Garcia in a tight thriller. The Canadian set a career-high WTA world ranking of fourth back in 2019 after completing a breakthrough season on tour with the US Open title after also claiming Indian Wells and the Canadian Open that season. However, she has struggled with injuries ever since and with the covid-19 pandemic forcing SW19 to close its doors in 2020 she has played just two matches at Wimbledon so far. Andreescu has been granted a winnable opener here by the draw gods as she makes the quick turnaround from final disappointment to first round game face. World number 225 Emina Bektas made her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open this January and she will make her second major appearance here after qualifying well.

The step-up in quality to face Andreescu for as first time is likely to be too much from the outset but Andreescu’s tough defeat on Saturday, and the fact that she was stunned in the first round here last season by Alize Cornet, makes taking her as outright winner a sensible move.
