ELISE MERTENS VS LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA PREDICTION
More commonly known for her proficiency in Doubles, Elise Mertens put a feather in her cap in Singles when she defeated four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the second round. The Belgian was particularly impressive on serve and faced just three break points throughout the match, which she wrapped up in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
Liudmila Samsonova overcame the challenge of Japanese youngster Moyuka Uchijima in the second round, after previously having been given a first-round bye due to her seeding. The sixth seed will have fond memories of this tournament owing to the fact she made it to the final last year, eventually losing to Jessica Pegula.
Mertens’ defeat of Osaka may be seen as a shock in some quarters but it wasn’t wholly unexpected given that Osaka is still not back at the levels that saw her get to number one in the world. Samsonova is very much at her top level right now though, and last year’s finalist can be tipped to progress to the quarter-finals in Toronto.
