THE LOWDOWN

ELISE MERTENS

20th seed Elise Mertens was exceptional in a straight-set dismissal of Marta Kostyuk on Saturday to reach the third round of Indian Wells for only the second time. The 26-year-old crashed out of the Women’s Doubles draw alongside Veronika Kudermetova as the top seeds but that should only help focus the Belgian more going forwards in the singles. World number 23 Mertens owns six WTA singles titles alongside a remarkable 15 WTA Doubles titles that include four Masters events, two from Indian Wells in 2019 and last season.

DARIA SAVILLE

27-year-old Daria Saville set a career-high WTA world ranking of 20th back in 2017, when she was known by her maiden name Daria Gavrilova. The current world number 409 has cut her ranking by over 100 places this campaign so far after stunning world number 10 Ons Jabeur in three sets on Saturday. Saville played just five matches in 2021 as she took time away from the sport.

THE PREDICTION

This would have looked an open-and-shut case for a comprehensive straight-set victory in Elise Mertens’ favour last week but Daria Saville is proving that class is permanent right now at Indian Wells. The naturalised Aussie played just five games in 2021 and after some training-wheel losses this season she has grabbed one of her career-best ranking wins to make a mockery of her current placing. Mertens has a cool enough head to weather some storms here and she leads their head-to-head record 3-1 having won each of their last three meetings – the most recent of which came at Roland-Garros in 2018. The suitably cautious pick here is for Mertens to win outright with Saville a total anomaly right now.
