ELISE MERTENS VS ARYNA SABALENKA PREDICTION

Elise Mertens came through a tough third-round clash with Madison Keys on Thursday in what was something of a marathon. The 6-7 7-5 6-4 win took six minutes short of three hours but the Belgian came through it to earn a round of 16 clash with Aryna Sabalenka.

The singles have become somewhat secondary in recent years for Mertens and she has won three WTA doubles titles this year alone. She is however enjoying some fine form this week and she will hope that continues.

She has met Sabalenka on nine previous occasions but has won just two of those. Both came as far back as 2018 when Sabalenka was just 20 but the Belarusian has not been beaten by her since then.

Sabalenka is understandably big favourite to win this match and that is no surprise. She is one of the favourites to win the title and she will be confident here. She had a little wake-up call in her third-round match where she lost the opening set to Ekaterina Alexandrova but she was responded in style to win out 2-6 6-1 6-2.

We fully expect her to win here and do not expect any easing off the gas. Consider Sabalenka to win in straight sets.
