THE PREDICTION

World number 29 Elise Mertens is the top seed this week at the Hobart International and she played like it on Monday, ousting former number nine Danielle Collins in straight sets. The 28-year-old came back from a set down to beat Sloane Stephens in Brisbane last week before a blistering 6-1 6-0 defeat to Elena Rybakina, a result that has since gotten better with age considering Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka 6-0 6-3 in the final. World number 67 Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova came back from a set down to beat Camila Osorio on Monday, building on some eye-catching results in qualifying, but Mertens is renowned for her consistency and it would be a surprise to see her shocked here.

The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record, with Schmiedlova winning on her favoured clay a the Madrid Open in 2019 and Mertens on hardcourts in Melbourne earlier that year, to suggest Mertens can be backed to take a 2-1 lead in conditions that suit her better.

TIP: ELISE MERTENS TO WIN
