THE PREDICTION

World number three Jessica Pegula takes on former world number three Elina Svitolina in the first real blockbuster match of the US Open. 29-year-old Pegula has conceded just eight games so far in one-sided wins over Camila Giorgi and Patricia Tig to build on her Canada Masters title-winning form last month but Svitolina has provided many of the summer’s best moments on court to look a serious threat to the US number one. World number 26 Svitolina came back from a set down to oust Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Thursday to make a big statement of intent as she continues to reimagine her once defence-forward game on court but Pegula beat her in similar fashion this time last month to make the semi-finals of the Washington Open. Pegula leads Svitolina 3-1 in their head-to-head record but a win this side of Svitolina’s maternity leave, over this new and improved version of the Ukrainian, looks like the deciding factor.

Pegula has won each of their last three matches, with all four taking place since the American evolved at the start of 2021, to make taking the third seed to earn at least a set the sensible way to avoid picking a winner. Otherwise, consider three sets in a one-off option here with Pegula the slight favourite to edge through on recent form.
