THE PREDICTION

World number four Elena Rybakina has not looked right on tour since a virus forced her out of Roland-Garros, with last month’s run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon her most convincing run since. The 24-year-old remains a title contender at the US Open after finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open back in January but she retired from a set up against Jasmine Paolini in the round of 16 in Cincinnati last week and she laboured through to the semi-finals in Montreal before that. World number 37 Marta Kostyuk upset Rybakina in three sets at the Adelaide 500 back in January to lead their head-to-head 1-0 and the Ukrainian has since improved on tour as she continues to mature as a player with top 10 potential. The 21-year-old brings a three-match losing streak into New York after defeat to the aforementioned Paolini last week in Cincinnati but she has beaten the likes of Bianca Andreescu, Caroline Garcia, Maria Sakkari and Paula Badosa in recent months to look a considerable threat.

Rybakina’s withdrawal last week was likely precautionary but the Kazakh has looked out of rhythm on her serve for some time now, with potential fitness issues behind the scenes. The sensible call is taking Rybakina to earn at least a set but the shrewd one could be taking the same in Kostyuk’s favour.
