THE PREDICTION

World number four Elena Rybakina conceded just three games to Marta Kostyuk in a big statement of intent on Monday after suffering a few troubling moments over the summer. The 24-year-old contracted a virus that saw her have to withdraw from Roland-Garros in June and she barely recovered in time to defend her Wimbledon title, where she played well before losing the 2022 final rematch with Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals. More recently, the Kazakh was outspoken in the ongoing debate on late-night scheduling in tennis after a 3am finish in Montreal saw her exhausted in a semi-final exit to Liudmila Samsonova the following day and she then had to withdraw from the Cincinnati Masters round of 16 a week later. Former world number 32 Ajla Tomljanovic returned from injury to win her first match of the season on Monday, coming back from a set down to beat Panna Udvardy. The 30-year-old played the tournament of her life here last season, becoming the fated player to end Serena Williams’ career in the third round before a quarter-final exit to eventual runner-up Ons Jabeur, but this looks several leagues too steep a climb right now.

Rybakina beat Tomljanovic in three sets in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last summer on her way to the title but she can take this third encounter in two.
