THE PREDICTION

World number 24 Veronika Kudermetova took out the pre-tournament favourite and second seed Belinda Bencic in straight sets on Friday in a big statement of intent. Elsewhere, world number 30 Ekaterina Alexandrova conceded just one game to Caty McNally in a dominative performance that makes this semi-final look exceptionally tight. Kudermetova has never lost to Alexandrova before, leading their head-to-head record 2-0 with two victories on clay and hard in 2019, but there is an interesting trend in her recent matches against fellow Russian that leaves a shred of doubt. The 25-year-old was losing to Anna Blinkova in the round of 16 before her fellow Russian retired injured and she lost to Daria Kasatkina at Roland-Garros, with her most recent runners-up trophy coming against another Russian in Anastasia Potapova in Istanbul. Call it cautious, but backing Kudermetova to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners looks sensible here.
