World number 123 Taylor Townsend is capable of a level far higher than her current ranking suggests and she proved it on Wednesday with a comfortable straight-sets victory over Anna Bondar. The 26-year-old is making an impressive return from maternity leave last season and whilst she has already justified her wildcard here there is certainly a scent of an upset in this second meeting with Ekaterina Alexandrova this season after a three-set first encounter when the Russian’s way at the Australian Open. World number 18 Alexandrova has not won a match on tour since mid-February, although that was over former world number one Karoline Pliskova, and she was stunned at this stage of Indian Wells two weeks ago by Xinyu Wang. The Russian is too good of a player to stay down for long but Townsend will be well-backed by a partisan crowd on Friday and she can be backed to take at least a set from Alexandrova for the second time this season.
