THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Donna Vekic ended last season in superb form as she beat Clara Tauson in straight sets to win the Courmayeur Open for a third career WTA title. Similarly, world number 46 Alison Riske won the Linz Open late last season for a third career WTA title of her own to cap off a successful return from a long injury lay-off. The 31-year-old also made the final of Adelaide 2 this week before Madison Keys outclassed her in the final but the American has some matches behind her already coming into Melbourne, with Vekic coming in cold. Vekic beat Riske in their most recent meeting at the Tenerife Ladies Open late last year in straight sets to take a 3-2 lead in their head-to-head record. Both of Riske’s wins came on grass whilst Vekic has taken all three of their meetings on hardcourts but given the Croatia’s lack of match practice so far this season taking Riske to win at least a set here seems the more reasonable way this one edges.
