Former world number eight Diego Schwartzman is ailing badly on tour right now and he could seriously have done with not receiving a bye to the round of 16 at the Chile Open as the fourth seed in Santiago. The 30-year-old has won just one match this season and barely in the first round of the Australian Open but a three-match losing streak on his favoured clay is the most concerning stat of his recent poor form, with early exits in Cordoba, Buenos Aires and Rio suggesting this will be Nicolas Jarry’s day. World number 87 Jarry has enjoyed a strong return to form in 2023 after spending much of the last few seasons in the wilderness and he almost upset defending Rio champion Carlos Alcaraz last week before a three-set defeat in the semi-finals. The Chilean has lost each of his four matches against Schwartzman in straight sets but the pair have not played since 2018, when the Argentine was enjoying some of his best tennis. This time around back in-form Jarry to heap further misery on Schwartzman, who looks like he needs a break from the tour.
