Former world number eight Diego Schwartzman snapped a troublesome six-match losing streak in a tough opener against qualifier Oleksii Krutykh on Tuesday, exorcising some demons in a four-set result. The 30-year-old’s fitness is still up for debate after he pulled out of the United Cup at the start of the season and then withdrew from his first match of the year in Adelaide but he should be better with a choppy win under his belt in this first meeting with J.J. Wolf. World number 67 Wolf overcame Jordan Thompson in four sets on Tuesday for an impressive opener against Aussie competition in Melbourne. The American finished runner-up to Felix Auger-Aliassime in his maiden ATP final at the Firenze Open last October and if form was the only factor in question here he would be the firm favourite to make the third round. Schwartzman is one of the more notorious battlers on tour but the longer this match goes the likelier it is that his fitness issues catch up with him.
