THE PREDICTION
World number nine Maria Sakkari won one of the more unpredictable match-ups on tour with aplomb on Monday, ousting Caroline Garcia in straight sets to claim back-to-back wins for the first time since early October. The 28-year-old has struggled for anything like consistent form for the best part of two seasons now but she enjoyed a brief respite to win her second WTA title at the Guadalajara Masters last September and similar conditions here in the desert should be boosting her brittle confidence a little.
21-year-old Diane Parry should not be underestimated, though, as she continues to improve on tour with a battling game suitable for all surfaces. The French youngster will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 53rd after ousting Anna Blinkova on Monday, backing-up an excellent result over Leylah Fernandez, and she will be all too aware of Sakkari’s fragility. At their respective best levels Sakkari should be blasting through in straight sets but even an outright call would be a risk for an accumulator. Back Sakkari to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance or consider a one-off on three sets here.
