Former world number two Paula Badosa dropped the opening set of her Hua Hin campaign to home hopeful Lanlana Taraudee before coming back in an error-strewn encounter. The 26-year-old proved herself capable of an incoming resurgence after impressive wins over Taylor Townsend and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova at the Australian Open two weeks ago but she is still far from her previous best still after 18 months of near-constant injury setbacks. World number 108 Diana Shnaider is a talented up-and-comer who set a career-high of 60th late last season after finishing runner-up to Ons Jabeur at the Ningbo Open. The Russian stunned top seed Magda Linete in three sets on Monday to look a strong contender for the title this week but Badosa should be better for an early scare. Badosa beat Shnaider in straight sets on clay last spring but back Shnaider to earn at least a set here as the just-about likelier to gain revenge.
