THE PREDICTION
World number 14 Daria Kasatkina came back from a set down to beat Alycia Parks on Tuesday in an impressive opener in these conditions. The 26-year-old reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer in form that saw her qualify for the WTA Finals for the first time late last season but she has so far peaked and troughed wildly in 2023 to make this clash a very unpredictable one. Former world number four Sofia Kenin beat Ana Bogdan in straight sets on Tuesday to get a foothold in at the US Open as she continues to, tentatively, work her way back from the wilderness of the past two years. The 24-year-old won the Australian Open in 2020 and then finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros that summer before her form almost totally left her. Kenin stunned fellow American Coco Gauff in the first round of Wimbledon this summer to prove what she can still do but she remains the underdog of this proper head-scratcher of a fixture late on Louis Armstrong.
Kenin leads Kasatkina 2-1 in their head-to-head but the Russian has won at least a set in each of their three meetings to offer a sensible way out. Take Kasatkina to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance.
