THE PREDICTION

World number seven Daniil Medvedev looks in good shape at Adelaide 1 considering he ended last season with four defeats in a row after his Vienna Open title. The 26-year-old has finished runner-up at each of the past two Australian Opens, to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, and he will be desperate to perform well this week to bring a winning streak to a promising third stint in Melbourne. World number 20 Karen Khachanov set his own best Grand Slam run at the US Open last September with a searing run to the semi-finals with wins over the likes of Pablo Carreno Busta, Nick Kyrgios and rising star Jack Draper, whom he beat in the round of 16 here to face his compatriot. Medvedev, younger by three months, leads their head-to-head 2-1 but the pair have not met on court since late 2019 and this will be a fascinating update. Both players are yet to drop a set but Medvedev conceded just three games to Miomir Kecmanovic and that suggests he can come through the outright winner. It would not be a surprise to see three sets here.
