THE PREDICTION
World number three Daniil Medvedev conceded just two games to Atilla Balazs in a woeful mis-match on Arthur Ashe on Tuesday but this follow-up should provide more of a challenge. 29-year-old Christopher O’Connell has enjoyed the best form of his career in 2023 and he will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 62nd after upsetting in-form Max Purcell in four sets. The Aussie took a surprise set from Medvedev in their clash at the Qatar Open back in February but Medvedev beat him in straight sets at this stage of the US Open three years ago to lead 2-0 on their head-to-head. 27-year-old Medvedev has been in some of the form of his career this season but he has yet to really click into top gear on the latter hardcourt swing. Taking the 2021 champion to win in straight sets is the reasonable move here but there is a nagging feeling that makes taking him outright inside an accumulator feel suitably sensible.
