THE PREDICTION

World number five Daniil Medvedev made it six wins on the spin on Wednesday with a comfortable straight sets victory over Lorenzo Sonego. The 27-year-old has won more matches than any other player this season to add the Rotterdam Open, Qatar Open, Dubai Tennis Championships and most recently the Miami Open to his now career total of 19 titles. The Russian has reached the final in each of his last five tournaments to bring incredible form into this enticing round of 16 clash but former world number two Alexander Zverev is certainly the more comfortable on clay as the owner of three Masters titles on the surface: two from Madrid in 2018 and 2022 as well as his first claimed in Rome back in 2017. The 25-year-old also owns 19 career ATP titles but six of his have come on clay courts whilst Medvedev considers himself a hardcourt specialist, with 18 of his 19 coming on hardcourts (the other coming on grass at the 2021 Mallorca Championships) and just one tour final reached on clay in Barcelona back in 2019.

Zverev beat Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets on Wednesday for a solid back-up of a three-set opener against Alexander Bublik and he will be keen on revenge after Medvedev went 7-6 ahead in their head-to-head record en-route to the Dubai in February. This is the fourteenth meeting between the two but the first on clay, so back Zverev to earn at least a set as the more comfortable in these conditions and leave the victor up to chance given how strong Medvedev is right now.
