THE PREDICTION
Defending champion Holger Rune conceded just six games to former world number three Dominic Thiem on Wednesday as his form continues to improve. The 20-year-old has spent much of the last few months looking bereft of ideas and a little jaded on court, with injuries partly to blame, but progress under new coach Boris Becker looks strong so far. A run to the Swiss Indoors semi-finals last week was ended by eventual champion Felix Auger-Aliassime to suggest that world number 54 Daniel Altmaier may not have enough in this first encounter but the German has nothing to lose in going all out after receiving a walkover at Taylor Fritz’ expense. A straight-sets victory over home hopeful Arthur Fils on Tuesday was a real shock and the 25-year-old has form for upsets this year after a memorable result over Jannik Sinner at Roland-Garros but these conditions better-suit Rune.
The Parisian crowd will be keen to amp up any potential aggro in this first encounter between two fierce fighters and that should make for a thriller in the late match. Back Rune to come through outright, for caution’s sake, with his level still vulnerable.
