THE LOWDOWN

COCO GAUFF

18-year-old Coco Gauff will match her career-high WTA world ranking of 16th first set at the start of this season after Ash Barty’s sudden retirement from the top of the sport. Gauff lost to the winners of her first two tournaments this season, to Barty at Adelaide 1 and then Madison Keys in the semi-finals of Adelaide 2, and more recently it has taken top 20 players to oust her from the past two Masters events.

QIANG WANG

World number 101 Qiang Wang came back from a set down to beat Ashlyn Krueger on Wednesday after she qualified well for the main draw. The 30-year-old reached four finals in a row back in 2018, winning two of them at the Nanchang Open and Guangzhou Open, to eventually set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th the following year.

THE PREDICTION

This is the fourth meeting between Coco Gauff and Qiang Wang in less than a year, with the Chinese player taking their most recent meeting in the first round of the Australian Open in January. Gauff took the first two meetings, both on clay, to win her second WTA title in the final of the Emilia-Romagna Open and then again in the second round of Roland-Garros. The teenager is a Florida native yet to make it past the second round of the Miami Open but she will be backed to the hilt once again by partisan crowds throughout her campaign and she should be backed to win outright here in her current form.
