THE PREDICTION

World number three Coco Gauff came back from a set down to beat Clara Burel in her opening match at Indian Wells but she has markedly improved with each passing round to look ready for a first final here. The US Open champion turned 20 on Wednesday, where she conceded just two games to Elise Mertens in the round of 16, and she snapped Yue Yuan’s excellent nine-match winning streak on Thursday to make her second prestigious semi-final of the season after losing out to Aryna Sabalenka at this stage of the Australian Open. World number nine Maria Sakkari came back from a set down to oust up-and-coming Emma Navarro on Thursday to pull within one win of her best showing here two years ago, where she finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek.

World number one Swiatek more than likely awaits one of these two in the final on Sunday as the champion elect but whilst Sakkari’s 3-2 lead over the Pole in their head-to-head suggests she has the better chance, Gauff beat the Pole for the first time en-route to the Cincinnati Masters title last summer to set a real benchmark for her improving level. Sakkari also leads Gauff in their head-to-head, 4-3, but the American has won each of their last two – just as Swiatek has against Sakkari – to portray the Greek’s recent depreciation on tour. Sakkari has looked like turning a corner this fortnight but Gauff beat her in straight sets to lift the Washington Open trophy last August, the first of her three incredible titles in two months, and she can be backed to reach the final here.

TIP: COCO GAUFF TO WIN
