THE LOWDOWN

19-year-old Coco Gauff conceded just two games to Jelena Ostapenko to reach the semi-finals of the US Open for the first time, bettering her run to the quarters here last summer. The teenager has reached a Grand Slam final before, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek last season, but she has never brought such promise to a major after recently winning the Washington Open and then Cincinnati Masters under new coach Brad Gilbert. Gauff beat Karolina Muchova in straight sets to lift the Cincinnati title, backing-up a first ever victory over Iga Swiatek.

27-year-old Karolina Muchova will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of eighth no matter the outcome here after conceding just three games to Sorana Cirstea on Tuesday. The Czech has matched her best hardcourt Grand Slam exit after her famous run to the Australian Open semi-finals in 2021 but she bettered her overall personal best this summer by finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros in three tight sets.

THE PREDICTION

Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova met for the first time just three weeks ago to see the American change the course of her career with a first Masters title in Cincinnati. Gauff beat Muchova in relatively comfortable straight sets that day after Muchova complained of fitness issues coming into the final but this should be a much better contested rematch with the Czech finding the peak of her powers in New York. The adverse weather conditions and home advantage heavily favour Gauff in this potential thriller but Muchova should not be underestimated as, clearly, one of the best players in the world now. Take Gauff to win outright with the whole of New York behind her but three sets could be the shrewd one-off option to avoid backing a victor.
