THE PREDICTION

World number two Iga Swiatek and number three Coco Gauff face off in the semi-final of a Masters tournament for the third time this season in what will be a fascinating clash. 19-year-old Gauff made it 16 wins on the spin with a straight-sets victory over Maria Sakkari on Friday and this will be the first time she comes into this match-up as a favourite, or even close to that, in her new-and-improved guise. Gauff beat Swiatek for the first time in eight meetings at the Cincinnati Masters, win number four in her current streak, and she usurped her as US Open champion last month one year after her crushing defeat to the Pole in her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros. 22-year-old Swiatek won each of their first seven encounters in comfortable straight sets but her comeback victory over Caroline Garcia on Friday was symptomatic of her form in recent months.

The Pole is still a force to be reckoned with but she is currently struggling to find her potent, ruthless best on court whilst Gauff’s confidence could not be any higher. Swiatek will be desperate to get back on top of this rivalry, set to define the WTA tour for at least the next five years, but Gauff’s insatiable form is hard to side against. Back the American to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
